Get to Know: Maryellen Rooney of maine melon

We’ve been hooked on maine melon since early 2016 when Katharine bought her first (of now many) pieces from Maryellen. Katharine, like Maryellen, grew-up on the coast of Maine, and if you haven’t noticed, generally gravitates towards anything (ok, everything) with a nautical nod. Truly, toss some stripes on it, sold. Anchors? Lobsters? Buoys? She’ll take two.

Our love affair with this coastal collection is getting serious; it evokes the feelings of beach days, summer nights and everything in between. #endlesssummer. Their well-known buoy bracelets along with all her unique pieces are locally manufactured in Maine and Rhode Island, in the same factory as David Yurman and Tiffany & Co. jewelry. nbd.

Fun Fact: Some of maine melon's designs take 2-3 years from drawing to manufacturing. Learn more about the founder, Maryellen, below!

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE “WHAT YOU DO” IN ONE SENTENCE?

I design coastal and nautically inspired jewelry from life in Maine and New England.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE BRAND EXPERIENCE- OTHER THAN YOUR OWN?

Dudley Stephen without a doubt is a brand experience that I love! They have gone about their business in a very fun and exciting way with drop days and engaging lifestyle content.

WHAT GETS YOU EXCITED EVERY DAY?

Working for myself and always being inspired with new ideas from my surroundings on the coast of Maine! I get very excited with new ideas and tend to not force any of my designs. You can't force creativity!

WHO’S YOUR IDOL?

Tory Burch. I was lucky enough to meet her way back in 2010. She could not have been more gracious and was so genuine. She has a foundation to support women entrepreneurs. Love that she started her own business & is supporting other women trying to live out their dreams as well!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO DISCONNECT AND DE-STRESS?

Playing outside with Buoy - our 6 year old Golden Retriever.

My Beacon Stud earrings. Wear them everyday!

WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE SOMEONE WANTING TO START THEIR OWN BRAND?

There is a Thomas Edison quote that I love, "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work!"

If you think it's going to be easy, it won't be! But it will be worth it :)

How would you describe "what you do" in one sentence?

I create clothing for people who want to feel good about what they are wearing on
the inside and out.

What's your favorite brand experience - other than your own?

There are so many awesome brand experiences I enjoy, but one I appreciate on a daily basis is Poshmark. If there is one thing I love doing, its purging!! I find so much satisfaction in getting rid of things we are no longer enjoying in our home. Poshmark has been a great outlet for making sure the pieces we once loved in our closet get to find a new life. I also enjoy purchasing items off the app, especially kids clothing! The process is easy and when I’ve had issues they are always resolved positively for both the buyer and the seller.

What gets you excited every day?

Simply being able to enjoy another day. Right after waking up I like to take a few minutes and focus on how fortunate to be laying there awake and breathing in another fresh day. I am a firm believer that anything is possible so excitement of the unknown keeps me chugging along each day!

Who's your idol?

My mom. She has been in my corner cheering me on, celebrating my wins, and drying my tears through every phase of life. I mean, how could I not idolize someone who has loved me through the bad decisions, worst days, and most awkward moments? My mom knows me better than myself and sees things in me that I don’t even know exist. Aside from all the mushy stuff, as much as it pains me to admit this (because I think I can be pretty damn funny), my mom truly is more funny than I am, so I will forever idolize her dry humor!

What's your favorite way to disconnect and de-stress?

Daily walks with my family, which includes my husband, daughter, and two dogs. The best walks are extra long, sunny, and warm!

What can you not leave home without?

My Patagonia jacket. I take it everywhere and it serves as my purse. I am not a big purse person, so I put everything I need in the jacket pockets. Even on warmer days you may see me wearing it or carrying it along since it already has all my stuff in it.

What is your Spirit Animal?

A bumble bee! I am definitely a “busy bee” and enjoy working hard. I feel my best when I am productive. Yet in the midst of all the tasks I love taking a moment to slow down, enjoy the small moments, and smell the flowers. One of the first times I ever hung out with my husband he caught me gazing at the sky on our way to dinner and when he questioned what I was doing I told him “one thing you will learn about me is that I love to stop and smell the flowers” -- so embarrassing, but so true, and thankfully he didn’t run after I made that statement!

What’s your current favorite podcast?

I love “How I Built This” I really enjoy how it humanizes large brands by digging into the real story behind their journey.

What’s one piece of advice you would give someone wanting to start their own brand?

Don’t wait until everything is perfect before you launch, or else you might end up waiting forever. Your brand will most likely always be evolving and changing, so what you create on day one will not be set in stone going forward. As Harry Truman says “imperfect action is better than perfect inaction.” Just start somewhere and build upon it each day.
